EU Council Launches First Negotiation Cluster for Ukraine's Membership—All Six Could Open by July.
EU Foreign Affairs Council Meeting
According to Espreso.tv: A meeting of the EU Foreign Affairs Council took place in Luxembourg, where discussions centered on unlocking negotiation clusters for Ukraine's accession to the European Union. A key outcome was the announcement that the first cluster would be opened, covering both Ukraine and Moldova.
Cluster Openings and Recommendations
Following the European Commission's recommendations, all six clusters are to be opened without delay, as Ukraine deserves this progress. EU representative Stenergard stated:
“Above all, I truly welcome that the first cluster is now being opened. But according to the Commission's recommendation, all six clusters should be opened right now, because Ukraine deserves it.”
The meeting also explored the possibility of opening all remaining clusters as early as July. Marta Kos remarked:
“Opening the first cluster in accession negotiations with Ukraine and Moldova is a significant milestone in the enlargement process, and there is hope that all other clusters could also be opened by July.”
Ukraine's path to EU membership is expected to take approximately four years, highlighting the length and complexity of this phase.
The launch of the first negotiation cluster for Ukraine's EU accession marks tangible progress in the relationship between Kyiv and Brussels. Given the European Commission's push to open all six clusters, this step sends a strong signal of EU support amid Ukraine's ongoing European integration efforts. If the remaining clusters are indeed opened in July, it could accelerate the accession timeline—a development crucial for regional stability and growth.
