NATO Must Revise Its Defense Doctrine in Response to Russian Threats, Says European Parliament Adviser.
Russian Threats and the Imperative for NATO Coordination
According to UATV: Petar Tanev, an adviser in the European Parliament, has highlighted the urgent threats posed by Russia and the critical need for NATO nations to coordinate their response. He stressed the importance of supporting Ukraine and revising Europe's defense doctrine to counter Kremlin aggression. Tanev warned that the current Russian regime is not only conducting hybrid attacks on European soil but is also planning assaults on the Baltic states, with the potential aim of annexing parts of their territory. This assessment comes amid Russia's ongoing full-scale war against Ukraine, which has fundamentally altered Europe's security landscape.
According to Tanev, the readiness to repel a Russian attack depends on the member states of the European Union. He also expressed concern about the potential reaction of former U.S. President Donald Trump, noting that under the current configuration, Trump would be unlikely to agree to defend any NATO country in the event of a potential Russian attack.
Legislative Initiatives and Regional Security
The European Parliament has already prepared a legislative framework to ramp up weapons production in Europe, signaling the seriousness of the threats and the necessity for a shift in defense approaches. Tanev emphasized the importance of proactive measures by NATO member states to ensure stability and security in the region.
