Investigation Launched into Roman Fresco Restoration

According to TSN.ua: Italian cultural authorities have opened an investigation into the restoration of a fresco in Rome's Basilica of San Lorenzo in Lucina. The probe was initiated after observers noted that an angel depicted in the artwork now bears a striking resemblance to Italy's Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni. The Ministry of Culture is now examining the work carried out in the chapel.

Public Reaction to the Controversial Restoration

The restoration, which has sparked both outrage and fascination, took place in a chapel where the angel fresco dates back to the year 2000. Restorer Bruno Valentinetti defended the work, stating it adhered strictly to the design and color palette of a previous restoration.

"I had to use the designs and colors from the past restoration; that could not be changed," said Bruno Valentinetti.

Church rector Daniele Micheletti added that the fresco was merely retouched after sustaining water damage. The incident has caused a significant public stir in Italy, where the preservation of cultural heritage is a matter of national pride. The angel's new appearance, now compared to a prominent political leader, has drawn mixed reactions from the public and cultural experts alike.

The debate highlights how art can become a canvas for social and political commentary, raising questions about the responsibility of restorers to preserve a work's authenticity in a modern context. Discussions over the restoration of cultural monuments, especially regarding their contemporary interpretation, frequently generate intense debate.
