Ukraine – a leader in mercury reserves: where are the richest deposits located.
Ukraine ranks fifth in the world for mercury ore reserves, accounting for 1.9 percent of all reserves on the planet. Interestingly, in Europe, we are in second place, although we lag behind Spain.
The largest mercury ore reserves are located in the Mykytivske deposit in Donetsk. Additionally, some mercury can be found in the Vyshkivske ore field in Transcarpathia.
Mykytivske Mercury Ore Deposit
The Mykytivske deposit in Donetsk region is one of the largest in the world. Here, industrial category mercury reserves reach 25 thousand tons, uniting six deposits. The coal here also contains several mineralized formations of mercury.
In the Donbas, there is also mercury-containing coal, with an area of mineralization exceeding 100 square kilometers, although only a quarter belongs to the endogenous halos of the deposits environmental.
Vyshkiv Ore Field in Transcarpathia
The Vyshkiv ore field includes two deposits: Borkut and Hrendesh. Borkut is depleted, and the mercury reserves here are small - only 800 tons. The Hrendesh deposit has mineralized fractures with minor mercury reserves.
In the past, there were also talks about places in Ukraine where one can find
amber, and which regions are key for its extraction. And about the
secretsof the Irshanske deposit.
Ukraine has significant mercury ore reserves, especially in the Mykytivske deposit in Donetsk and the Vyshkiv ore field in Transcarpathia. This provides the country with certain opportunities in developing the mining industry and offers potential opportunities for the use of mercury in industry and other sectors of the economy.
