Rio Ngumo signed a new contract with Liverpool

According to The Sun: 17-year-old footballer Rio Ngumo has signed his first professional contract, which almost quadruples his annual salary. He will now earn about £52,000 a year under a three-year deal.

This deal is the maximum allowed under Football Association rules for players of his age. Liverpool, Premier League champions, also has restrictions on salaries for 17-year-old footballers.

Before signing the new contract, Ngumo was earning only £14,400 a year. However, his outstanding goal that brought the team victory 3-2 against Newcastle last month made him a real star at Anfield and the club's youngest scorer in history at just 16 years and 361 days.

Although he could not sign a full professional contract earlier, following his birthday on August 29, Liverpool decided to secure his future by signing him from Chelsea last September. He was quickly included in the team after impressive performances during the summer preseason tour.

Ngumo made his Champions League debut on September 17 in a match against Atletico Madrid, finishing again with a score of 3-2. He also marked his first starting appearance in a winning Carabao Cup match against Southampton (2-1).

Now the young talent from Newham can enjoy his first significant income in his career. However, his transfer is discussed in the context of a controversial compensation battle initiated by Chelsea, which signed him when he was just eight years old.

Comments from John Terry

Chelsea legend John Terry expressed his regret that the 'ambitious' young player left the club for Liverpool.

“He is a very ambitious young man who wanted to play for the first team and believed this was his path to Liverpool's first team,” said Terry. “We had a really good team up to 14 years old, and he was a vital part of it.”

“Not many players like him are left. I am sure in the academy we will lose many like him, but there is always one you regret,” he added. “He is confident, takes the ball, has a lot of personality.”
“He showed this ability in the academy, and unfortunately we lost him,” said Terry. “I wish him good luck, as he is truly a great player.”
Rio Ngumo's future looks incredibly promising, and his rise at Liverpool will be of interest not only in England but also beyond. His successes could serve as an example for many young footballers aspiring to a professional career. Meanwhile, clubs, including Chelsea, may need to rethink their academies to avoid losing talents.
