According to The Sun: Rory McIlroy and his wife Erica Stoll showed support for each other after an incident where a fan reportedly threw a drink at her during the Ryder Cup.

On a tense second day of competition at Bethpage, the Northern Irishman faced harassment from fans, including regarding his wife Erica and former fiancée Caroline Wozniacki.

In a video from the 17th green, one of the fans can be heard shouting:

“Someone just threw a drink at her!”
, though it is unclear if Erica was actually harmed.

McIlroy noticed something had happened with her cap and asked:

“Are you alright?”
, while security surrounded the couple.

After the match, Rory and his partner Shane Lowry defeated Justin Thomas and Cameron Young, bringing Europe closer to victory in the Ryder Cup in New York.

On-field conflicts and emotional pressure

McIlroy, who had previously asked the crowd to

“shut up”
, admitted that the hostility made him feel 'exhausted.' He added:
“When you play on an away Ryder, it's really tough.”

“People can decide for themselves where the line is drawn.”

The on-field conflicts did not end there: while executing a shot McIlroy lost his composure again, stating he would not play until the noise died down. After that, he successfully hit the ball, allowing him to level the score.

Shane Lowry also showed emotions, getting into an argument with one of the fans in the later stages of the game.

Lowry commented:

“It was intense — something I’ve never felt before. But it’s what I live for.”

Among the tense moments, it has been less than a year since McIlroy filed for divorce from Erica, but they later decided to stay together, looking happy and strong as they left the field holding hands.

Commenting on their struggles, Rory said:

“In the past few weeks, we’ve realized that our best future is to be together as a family.”

Meanwhile, Bryson DeChambeau also could not hold back, losing control during the game in pairs with Scottie Scheffler against Tommy Fleetwood and Justin Rose, which sparked discussions among fans.

This emotional charge during the Ryder Cup demonstrates not only a high level of competition but also the psychological pressure that players face on the field. These events can significantly impact their game and relationships, especially under great fan support or opposition.

Europe’s success in this competition emphasizes the importance of teamwork and supporting each other, particularly under such stress, and shows how fans can be both inspiring and demoralizing for athletes.
