Russian Strikes Hit Four Ukrainian Regions on February 1: Assessing the Casualties and Damage.
Russian Military Assaults Target Ukrainian Regions
According to UATV: On February 1, 2023, Russian forces launched attacks against the Dnipropetrovsk, Zaporizhzhia, Kharkiv, and Kherson regions of Ukraine. These strikes resulted in significant civilian casualties and widespread damage to infrastructure across multiple settlements. This latest wave of aggression is part of the ongoing, full-scale invasion that began in February 2022.
In the city of Dnipro, the assault killed two people. Within the Nikopol district of Dnipropetrovsk Oblast, two apartment buildings and four private homes were destroyed. Across 15 settlements in Kherson Oblast, shelling wounded 10 people, including three children. In the city of Kharkiv and five other locations within the region, two individuals were injured.
Scale of the Attack in Zaporizhzhia Oblast
Zaporizhzhia Oblast endured particularly intense bombardment. Over the course of the day, Russian troops struck 26 separate settlements a total of 383 times. The assault involved:
- nearly 700 drone strikes,
- more than 300 artillery barrages,
- and seven separate attacks using multiple launch rocket systems.
Local police in Zaporizhzhia Oblast received 149 separate reports of destruction caused by the attacks.
In a separate incident in Kherson, a civilian car detonated a PFM-1 'Petal' anti-personnel landmine. The explosion injured all four members of a family traveling in the vehicle. These events underscore the persistent dangers facing civilians from both direct attacks and the widespread contamination of Ukrainian territory with explosive remnants of war.
The strikes on these regions highlight the continuation of active military operations across Ukraine and their devastating consequences for the civilian population.
The rising toll of casualties and destruction points to an escalation in hostilities, which risks triggering a more severe humanitarian crisis. With the situation remaining volatile, the safety of non-combatants is a paramount concern, and these events are likely to prompt further international scrutiny of the conflict's conduct.
