Ukraine’s Infrastructure Hit in March 17 Attack
According to UATV: On March 17, 2023, Russian forces launched strikes against Ukraine’s port and railway infrastructure, particularly in the Sumy and Chernihiv regions. The attacks caused damage and led to disruptions in energy supplies, affecting daily life for thousands of residents.
Breakdown of the Strikes
In the Sumy region, Russian drones targeted a railway line, igniting an unused railcar. Preliminary reports indicate no casualties from this incident. In southern Ukraine, a barge came under attack, and several utility structures at one port were damaged.
In the Chernihiv region, the town of Novhorod-Siverskyi saw damage to homes, shops, and power grids. More than 200 consumers were left without electricity, and gas supply interruptions have also been reported. In the Snovsk community, strikes hit a district court, a business, and a residential building, along with an energy facility.
Overall, the Russian military deployed 178 attack drones against Ukraine, with 22 of them hitting 12 different locations, according to regional military administration head Vyacheslav Chaus.
These infrastructure attacks, especially on railways and port facilities, highlight Russia’s ongoing military aggression and pose serious risks to Ukraine’s economy and energy security.
Damage to energy infrastructure is causing electricity and gas supply disruptions, which will negatively impact citizens’ everyday lives. These events underscore the critical need to protect vital infrastructure during the conflict.
