Ukraine Intercepts 91 of 112 Drones in Major Russian Attack, One Killed.
Russia Launches Large-Scale Assault on Ukraine for Valentine's Day
According to Novyny.live: In a major overnight assault on February 14, 2023, Russian forces attacked Ukraine with a barrage of drones and a ballistic missile. The strikes hit multiple locations, resulting in civilian casualties and damage. This attack is part of a sustained Russian campaign targeting Ukrainian cities and infrastructure, which has intensified in recent months.
According to reports, the attack involved 112 Iranian-made Shahed drones, also known as 'Geran' or 'Italmas' models. Ukrainian air defense forces successfully intercepted or neutralized 91 of the hostile drones. Despite this defensive effort, 18 drones struck their targets, causing damage at 11 different sites. Falling debris from downed drones caused additional destruction at two of these locations.
The attack resulted in the death of a 73-year-old woman in Odesa. Two other people were injured in the Vyshhorod district of the Kyiv region. These civilian casualties underscore the ongoing threat to non-combatants from such aerial bombardments.
International Concern and Wider Strategy
This bombardment reflects Russia's broader strategy of regularly targeting Ukrainian civilian infrastructure, a tactic that has drawn condemnation from the international community. While Ukraine's air defense demonstrates a significant capacity to protect its population, the attacks continue to inflict human and material losses. The situation in Ukraine remains volatile, with these incidents highlighting the critical need for continued international support to counter the aggression and protect civilians.
