Russian Assault on February 18

According to UATV: On February 18, Russian forces launched a large-scale aerial attack against Ukraine, firing one 'Iskander-M' ballistic missile and 126 unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) of various types. The missiles and drones were launched from multiple locations within Russia, including Bryansk, Kursk, Oryol, Shatalovo, and Primorsko-Akhtarsk, as well as from occupied Crimea, specifically from Hvardiiske. This attack is part of a sustained Russian campaign targeting Ukrainian civilian infrastructure and energy systems.

A significant portion of the UAVs used in the assault were Iranian-made 'Shahed' drones, with approximately 80 of the 126 launched drones being of this type. Ukrainian air defense forces successfully intercepted or neutralized 100 of the hostile drones across the northern, southern, and eastern regions of the country. Despite these defensive efforts, 23 missiles and drones struck 14 different locations, with falling debris recorded at three of these sites.

Consequences of the Attack

As a result of earlier strikes in the Zaporizhzhia region, six people were wounded, including two children. This latest barrage underscores the persistent threat posed by Russian aerial bombardments and highlights the critical need for continued support and enhancement of Ukraine's air defense capabilities. The ongoing war has seen Russia increasingly rely on mass drone and missile attacks to overwhelm Ukrainian defenses.

This incident illustrates the constant danger Russia presents to Ukraine through multi-directional aerial assaults. The importance of a robust and modern air defense system is increasingly urgent, as such attacks lead to civilian casualties and significant damage to critical infrastructure. Given the rising frequency of these assaults, Ukrainian forces must continue to strengthen their defensive capabilities to protect the country's population and vital assets.
