Extensive Aerial Barrage Targets Ukraine on February 2, 2023
According to UATV: On February 2, 2023, Russian forces launched a large-scale aerial assault against Ukraine, employing a ballistic Iskander-M missile and 171 attack drones. The operation was conducted from the temporarily occupied territory of Crimea and several other directions, including from the areas of Orel, Kursk, Primorsko-Akhtarsk, Millerovo, and the temporarily occupied parts of the Donetsk region. These attacks are part of a sustained Russian campaign targeting Ukrainian energy and civilian infrastructure.
By 09:00, Ukrainian air defense forces had managed to shoot down or jam 157 of the hostile UAVs. Of the total drones launched, approximately 100 were identified as Shahed-type models. Despite this high interception rate, one ballistic missile and 12 drones struck their targets across eight different locations in Ukraine.
Drone Strikes Hit Zaporizhzhia
In a related incident the previous day, on February 1, 2023, drone attacks in Zaporizhzhia resulted in injuries to nine people. The strikes caused significant damage, including to 15 apartment buildings and two private houses. The city of Zaporizhzhia, located near the front lines, has frequently been a target for such attacks.
The scale of these assaults by the Russian military underscores the persistent and serious threat to Ukraine's civilian population and critical infrastructure. While Ukrainian air defenses demonstrate considerable effectiveness, the impact of even a single missile or drone that gets through can be severe. The situation in Zaporizhzhia, where multiple civilians were harmed, illustrates the critical need for continuous security measures amid the ongoing conflict and highlights the importance of international support for Ukraine's air defense capabilities.
