According to UATV: On June 2, the Russian military executed a large-scale, coordinated assault on Ukraine, targeting Kyiv as the primary focus. The attack also struck regions including Dnipro, Kharkiv, Zaporizhzhia, Poltava Oblast, and elsewhere. In total, Russian forces deployed 729 aerial assault systems, consisting of 73 missiles and 656 drones.

Ukrainian defenses managed to intercept or neutralize 642 of these threats, including 40 missiles and 602 drones. The breakdown of intercepted assets is as follows:

  • 30 ballistic missiles
  • 3 cruise missiles
  • 33 attack unmanned aerial vehicles

Drone launches originated from multiple locations, including Bryansk, Kursk, Oryol, Millerovo, Primorsko-Akhtarsk, Gvardeyskoye, and Chayuda. Debris from downed drones was reported at 15 separate sites.

Human Toll and Damage

The strikes inflicted severe losses in Kyiv, killing 4 people and wounding 63 others. The operation featured a diverse arsenal of missile types, specifically:

  • 8 3M22 'Zircon' missiles
  • 33 'Iskander-M' missiles
  • 27 Kh-101 missiles
  • 5 'Kalibr' missiles

This assault ranks among the most extensive since the conflict began, highlighting the range and intensity of weaponry employed by Russian forces.

This attack underscores the escalating conflict and Russia's continued use of aggressive military tactics.

The surge in missile and drone strikes may indicate a shift in Russian military strategy, as well as an intent to maintain pressure on Ukrainian forces and civilians. Meanwhile, the effectiveness of Ukraine's air defenses—which succeeded in destroying the majority of incoming threats—demonstrates the country's ongoing efforts to protect its territory and population.
