Russia Targets Ukraine's Rail Network: Strikes on Locomotives and Passenger Trains.
Ukraine's Railway Infrastructure Under Attack
According to UATV: On February 2, 2023, Ukraine's Ministry for Communities and Territories Development reported that Russia is attacking the country's railway infrastructure. According to the ministry, the aggressor is using unmanned aerial vehicles to target locomotives and passenger trains, endangering civilian safety and transport in regions served by rail lines. Ukraine's railways are a vital artery for both civilian movement and military logistics, making them a strategic target.
One such attack involved a drone strike on a diesel locomotive at a station in Zaporizhzhia. The locomotive crew was in a shelter at the time, so no one was injured. This incident highlights the dangers faced by railway workers operating in a warzone.
In another attack on January 27, 2023, Russian forces used three drones to strike a train carrying over 150 passengers near the village of Yazykove in the Izium district. These events underscore the severe threat such assaults pose to civilians and passenger transport in Ukraine.
Consequences of the Attacks on Rail Infrastructure
The attacks on Ukraine's railway system signal an escalation of the conflict and increased risks for the civilian population. Given the critical role railways play in transporting people and goods, these actions could worsen the country's economic situation and hinder access to vital resources. Targeting civilian infrastructure is a violation of international humanitarian law.
