Russian Forces Target Snake Island with X-22 Missiles, Striking a Key Ukrainian Symbol.
Missile Strike on Snake Island
According to Novyny.live: On March 9, Russian long-range Tu-22M3 bombers fired three X-22 cruise missiles at the area of Snake Island. This strategically important Black Sea outpost was retaken by Ukrainian forces in the summer of 2022. Russian troops evacuated their garrison on June 30, 2022, and Ukraine officially completed the liberation operation on July 4, raising the national flag on the island on July 7.
Snake Island's Strategic Significance
Snake Island has become a potent symbol of Ukrainian resistance and the struggle for control over the northwestern Black Sea. Following its recapture, Ukrainian forces have worked to fortify their positions there, marking a critical phase in the maritime confrontation with Russian forces. Control of this island influences shipping lanes and regional security.
Context of Russian Attacks
These strikes occur amidst continued intense combat in southern Ukraine. As of the morning of March 10, Ukrainian air defenses in the south reported intercepting or jamming 23 Shahed and 'Gerbera' type drones, 45 other types of attack drones, and four reconnaissance UAVs. The Ukrainian Navy also destroyed 11 Shahed-136 attack drones over the previous day. This high volume of drone activity underscores the ongoing fierce battles in regions including those near Snake Island.
The attacks on Snake Island highlight the persistent tension in the Black Sea, where control over islands and vital supply routes remains a strategic priority for both sides. Ukrainian military efforts to defend their gains in the region are met with Russian attempts to reassert control, illustrating the continuous military action and strategic struggle for influence over this key geographical point.
