Russia cancels agreement with the USA on plutonium: what does it mean for the world.
According to inkorr.com: The State Duma of Russia has decided to terminate the agreement with the United States on the disposal of plutonium. This agreement was signed in 2000 and reaffirmed in 2011, with its main goal being the destruction of 34 tons of plutonium from both sides through reprocessing at nuclear power plants.
Russia unexpectedly suspended this process in 2016, arguing this was due to 'unfriendly actions by the United States.'
The Kremlin emphasizes that to restore cooperation, a number of conditions must be met: withdrawal of American troops from Eastern European countries, lifting sanctions regarding Crimea and Donbas, cancellation of the 'Magnitsky Act,' and compensation for losses due to sanctions. This is just one of the stages that Russia is implementing to reduce control over armaments. In February 2023, it was also announced that participation in the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty would be suspended.
Russia's Strategy
The Russian side is gradually trying to dismantle control mechanisms over armaments, demanding specific actions from the USA to restore cooperation on its terms.
This decision indicates a further escalation of relations between Russia and the United States, as well as highlighting changes in the global political landscape. The conditions proposed by the Kremlin may complicate further negotiations and affect the security situation in Europe.
