Russia Plans to Call Up 500,000 Troops This Fall, Signaling Escalated Fighting in Eastern Ukraine.
Russia's Mobilization Strategy
According to Espreso.tv: Andriy Kovalenko, head of the Center for Countering Disinformation, has revealed that Russia intends to mobilize 500,000 people by autumn, specifically to support combat operations in eastern Ukraine. He warned that the coming fall and winter will bring intense infantry battles, requiring a massive influx of personnel.
“Russia is preparing to mobilize up to 500,000 people for the fall,” Kovalenko stated.
In May 2023, there was a sharp increase in online searches related to mobilization, reflecting growing public interest in the topic. However, recruitment in the first quarter of 2026 dropped by 20% compared to 2025, suggesting difficulties in attracting new conscripts. Meanwhile, in June 2023, authorities in the Volgograd region began training civilians for mass mobilization.
Potential Implications of the Mobilization
On July 2, 2023, Maryna Danyliuk-Yarmolaieva also warned of possible preparations for a new mobilization drive ahead of the State Duma elections in the fall. Earlier that month, analyst Mykola Bielieskov had noted the likelihood of a large-scale mobilization to turn the tide on the battlefield.
“Kiriyenko and Gerasimov have assured Putin that this will help them overcome us,” Kovalenko added, underscoring the seriousness of the situation and the Kremlin's intentions.
This information points to rising military tensions in the region and a potential shift in Russia's tactics in its war against Ukraine. The mobilization plans could reshape military strategy in eastern Ukraine, where active combat is already ongoing. Additionally, the growing public curiosity about mobilization may indicate increasing awareness and concern among the population regarding the front-line situation.
