Arctic Express Tanker Joins Russian Fleet

According to Espreso.tv: The Arctic Express tanker has become part of Russia's fleet after re-registering under the Russian flag. It loaded gas at the Saam floating storage unit in Murmansk, supporting the sanctioned Arctic LNG 2 project. In May 2023, the project exported over 400,000 tons of gas, setting a record for this route.

Built 19 years ago, the Arctic Express is one of several older vessels now integrated into Russia's expanding fleet, used to circumvent sanctions on energy exports. Ownership of the tanker was transferred to Smp Techmanagement LLC in mid-May 2023. This company also holds three other gas carriers, highlighting its growing role in Russia's gas infrastructure.

International Sanctions and Russia's Response

The Arctic LNG 2 project faces U.S. sanctions, while the European Union is preparing its 21st sanctions package against Russia. These measures reflect ongoing international pressure, prompting Moscow to adapt through alternative shipping methods, including its so-called shadow fleet.

The Arctic Express tanker's integration into Russia's fleet and its involvement with Arctic LNG 2 demonstrate Moscow's efforts to navigate economic restrictions imposed by the global community.

Leveraging older vessels for gas exports despite sanctions underscores Russia's growing reliance on unconventional delivery routes. It also emphasizes the critical role of gas exports for the Russian economy, even under mounting international pressure and trade restrictions.
