Stormy Weather Grounds Russian 'Kalibr' Missiles, Exposing Naval Base Weakness
According to Novyny.live: During a large-scale attack on Ukraine on the night of October 1, 2023, Russia employed various ballistic missiles, strategic aircraft, and drones. Notably absent, however, were launches of 'Kalibr' cruise missiles from the sea, a disruption attributed to stormy conditions. Retired Navy Captain Andriy Ryzhenko stated that despite at least one frigate being prepared for a 'Kalibr' launch from Novorossiysk, severe weather significantly hampered these plans. This incident highlights the operational vulnerabilities Russia faces in the Black Sea theater.
Why Novorossiysk is a Problematic Naval Base
Novorossiysk is considered one of the most inconvenient major bases on the Black Sea. Ryzhenko emphasized that winds in this region can rapidly whip up dangerous waves, negatively impacting maritime safety. Compared to Novorossiysk, Sevastopol in occupied Crimea offers a more secure location for basing warships. These geographical factors cast serious doubt on Novorossiysk's effectiveness as a military naval base, especially during adverse weather.
This situation illustrates the broader logistical challenges confronting the Russian Black Sea Fleet amid the ongoing conflict and unpredictable conditions. The inability to launch 'Kalibr' missiles from Novorossiysk points to operational limitations and underscores the need for more reliable bases to ensure fleet effectiveness. Consequently, Russia's future military actions may depend on reassessing the safety and suitability of its various naval facilities for conducting maritime operations.
