European Security Under Threat: Russia Linked to Over 150 Acts of Sabotage.
Sabotage Campaigns Across Europe Amid the Ukraine War
According to UATV: Since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine, European authorities have documented more than 150 acts of sabotage on the continent, with the majority linked to Russian intelligence services. The data shows a concerning trend, with 64 incidents recorded in 2024 and 320 sabotage attempts logged in Germany in 2023 alone. This represents a significant increase in such covert operations targeting European infrastructure and support for Ukraine over recent years. This campaign is part of a broader hybrid warfare strategy aimed at destabilizing support for Kyiv.
European Nations Most Affected by Sabotage
Among European countries, Poland has been a primary target, witnessing 31 sabotage cases since the war began, including a railway terrorist attack in November 2025. France has also faced a significant threat, with a total of 20 incidents, five of which occurred from mid-2025 onward. Over a four-year period, Lithuania and Germany each recorded 15 sabotage incidents, while the United Kingdom and Estonia documented 12 and 11 cases, respectively.
In a separate incident highlighting aerial threats, a drone was shot down near a French aircraft carrier off the coast of Sweden on February 25, 2025. Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson stated that
"all evidence points to this being a violation of Swedish airspace by Russia using drones."Concurrently, Swedish Defense Minister Jean-Noël Barraud suggested that if the incident was indeed of Russian origin, it would constitute
"a ridiculous provocation."
Expert Taavi Naritsa emphasized that 'Russian intelligence services exploit individuals for their purposes regardless of nationality or citizenship.' This underscores that the threat of sabotage within Europe remains acute, requiring nations to prepare for potential new security challenges. European intelligence agencies warn that these operations often recruit assets locally to obscure Moscow's direct involvement.
The escalation of sabotage incidents across Europe, connected to Russian services, highlights the critical need for enhanced international cooperation on security. Events like the railway terror attack in Poland and the airspace violation in Sweden illustrate the growing risks facing European states. This necessitates strengthened security measures and closer coordination among nations to prevent further threats and protect critical infrastructure.
