Russia's War Strategy Shifts: A New Phase Focused on Attacking Rear Areas.
Russia's War on Ukraine Enters a New Tactical Phase
According to UATV: Russia's war against Ukraine has entered a new stage, according to Serhiy Bratychuk, a spokesperson for the Ukrainian Volunteer Army. In a statement on January 17, 2026, he noted that shifts in Russian military tactics became apparent starting in the autumn of 2025. The primary focus of military operations is now on strikes targeting rear areas, logistics, and infrastructure. This strategy aims not only to destabilize the economy but also to force local populations to flee their homes.
Since the start of the current year and effectively from last autumn, Russian attacks have become more frequent and damaging. Bratychuk emphasized that strikes on rear areas have become the main effort for Russian forces, while fighting on the front line remains a priority. He stated that to conduct more effective strikes against Ukrainian rear areas, Russia is actively enhancing its attack drones, including models such as the 'Shahed' and 'Geran'. This evolution in tactics reflects a broader trend in modern warfare, where long-range strikes are used to degrade an opponent's ability to sustain a fight.
New Challenges for Ukrainian Forces
In response to these new challenges, Bratychuk also highlighted the necessity for Ukrainian forces to strike Russian energy infrastructure. In his view, this could be a crucial step in countering the emerging threats resulting from the enemy's tactical shift. Consequently, the war in Ukraine remains at the center of international attention, with the aggressor's changing strategy forcing Ukrainian forces to develop new approaches to combat.
These new tactical changes in Russia's strategy may signal an evolution of the conflict, where an emphasis on rear-area strikes could significantly impact the combat readiness and morale of both Ukrainian troops and civilians. The use of new technologies like drones underscores the growing importance of innovation in military conflicts, compelling Ukraine to adapt to new conditions.
Such changes may also influence international support for Ukraine, as partner nations may need to reassess their aid strategies in response to these new challenges.
