Zelenskyy Reacts After Russia Proposed Swapping Abducted Children for Prisoners of War.
Ukraine Rejects Offer to Trade Children for Captured Soldiers
According to Novyny.live: Moscow proposed exchanging unlawfully deported Ukrainian children for its own prisoners of war. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy responded by calling the offer unacceptable and a violation of international law, stating that civilians cannot be traded—they must simply be returned. He argued that the very proposal proves the children were abducted. This situation has drawn outrage both within Ukraine and across the global community.
According to Ukrainian authorities, Russia has illegally removed at least 20,000 children from Ukraine. So far, Kyiv has managed to identify roughly 20,000 of these children, but only about 2,200 have been brought back home. The initiative Bring Kids Back UA, which unites around 50 countries, is actively working to secure the return of the remaining abducted minors.
International Sanctions Over Child Abductions
In May 2026, the United Kingdom, Canada, and the European Union imposed new sanctions on Russian individuals and organizations involved in the kidnapping of Ukrainian children. These steps by the international community demonstrate a serious commitment to addressing the crisis and supporting Ukraine in its efforts to recover its citizens—especially children who have been placed in precarious circumstances due to Russia’s aggression.
This situation highlights not only the humanitarian catastrophe caused by Russia's war but also the urgent need for a coordinated international response to such crimes. Ukraine’s firm stance and the backing of global allies could prove crucial in returning the abducted children and holding perpetrators accountable.
It remains essential for all nations to continue working together to resolve this crisis and uphold human rights, particularly for the most vulnerable populations, including children.
