Russia has deployed military equipment near the reactors of the ZNPP: violation of international law.
Deployment of military equipment near the ZNPP
According to UATV: Russian occupiers have positioned military equipment in close proximity to the nuclear reactors of the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP). This raises concerns as the use of nuclear facilities for military purposes is prohibited by international law. The actions of the Russian military threaten the safety not only of the region but also of the entire European continent.
On January 14, 2023, Vladyslav Voloshyn reported the deployment of Russian military equipment near the ZNPP. He noted that the Russian forces are using the territory of the power plant as a training ground for drone operators. This indicates a violation of international legal norms that prohibit the military use of nuclear facilities.
Concerns regarding safety
Moreover, the ZNPP territory has repeatedly been used to launch strikes with multiple launch rocket systems on Zaporizhzhia. Vladyslav Voloshyn mentioned that in this way, the Russian forces are covering their equipment, hoping that the Armed Forces of Ukraine will not strike the nuclear infrastructure facility. These actions raise serious concerns about the safety of nuclear facilities in Ukraine and their impact on regional stability.
The placement of military equipment near the ZNPP highlights serious risks associated with military conflicts in areas where strategically important facilities are located. Given historical cases of nuclear incidents, such actions can have catastrophic consequences not only for Ukraine but also for neighboring countries. This raises the question of the necessity of international control over nuclear facilities in armed conflict conditions.
