France exchanged a Russian hacker for its researcher Vignatye: details of the deal

According to ТСН: Russia released French researcher Laurent Vignatye, who had previously been sentenced to three years in prison for violating foreign agent laws. The decision for the pardon became known after the release of Russian basketball player Danila Kasatkin, who was suspected of cyberattacks.

The exchange was reported by representatives of Russia and France, to whom the press, including Reuters, turned.

“Our compatriot Laurent Vignatye is free and has returned to France. I share the relief felt by his family and friends,” French President Emmanuel Macron wrote on social media.

He also expressed gratitude to French diplomats for their work.

According to the FSB, the 49-year-old Vignatye was exchanged for Danila Kasatkin, who was detained at a Paris airport in June last year. Kasatkin is wanted in the U.S. for possible involvement in cyber crimes.

The FSB stated that President Vladimir Putin pardoned Vignatye after an appeal from a French journalist at the annual press conference.

What the Frenchman was accused of

Vignatye was arrested by the FSB at a Moscow restaurant in June 2024 and was sentenced in October for violating requirements that obligate individuals recognized as “foreign agents” to register with Russian authorities.

While in custody, additional investigations for espionage were initiated against him, and he faced a new trial.

The FSB claims Vignatye collected confidential information that could threaten Russia's security while being influenced by Swiss intelligence. However, the case was closed due to his “active remorse.”

At the time of his arrest, Vignatye was working at the Center for Humanitarian Dialogue, engaged in legitimate research. Colleagues described him as a respected scientist.

In court, Vignatye stated: “I love Russia,” apologizing for breaking the law and even quoting a poem by Russian poet Alexander Pushkin.

France emphasized the illegality of Vignatye's detention, calling for his release. President Macron denied that Vignatye was working for the French state and considered his arrest part of a disinformation campaign by Moscow.

What is known about the release of Kasatkin

Russian basketball player Kasatkin also denied the charges of cyberattacks. His lawyer, Frédéric Belot, noted that Kasatkin had no specialized knowledge in computer technology and had been using a second-hand device controlled by cybercriminals.

Kasatkin flew out of France and returned to Moscow.

It is worth noting that in December of last year, five Ukrainian citizens held in Belarus were returned home thanks to the cooperation of Ukrainian and American intelligence.

This exchange indicates the continuation of diplomatic efforts to resolve conflict situations between countries. At the same time, it may be a sign that international politics is not limited to harsh standoffs but also includes elements of cooperation and interaction, despite tensions.
