Russia withdraws from the Convention against Torture: what does it mean for human rights

According to inkorr.com: The Russian government made the decision to withdraw the country from the Council of Europe Convention against Torture. This happened after Russia was excluded from the Council of Europe in March 2022, after which its participation in the convention became merely a formality. Now Russia continues to refuse international cooperation in the field of human rights protection.

Recent steps taken by Russia

This decision is not an isolated one: earlier, Russia withdrew from the European Convention on Human Rights, and also canceled the action of the Charter of the Council of Europe and the European Social Charter in 2023. Thus, for several years, the country has been ignoring its international obligations in the field of human rights.

'This is not the first similar step: Russia has already denounced the European Convention on Human Rights, and since 2023 the Charter of the Council of Europe, the European Social Charter, and a number of other agreements ceased to operate on its territory. In 2024, the country also withdrew from the convention on the protection of national minorities,' the intelligence emphasized.

Thus, Russia remains isolated from the international community on the issue of human rights protection, continuing to ignore international norms and standards. These actions confirm the long-term process of Moscow's refusal to fulfill its obligations, which raises concern among human rights defenders and international organizations.
