Russia Seizes Two Million Tons of Ukrainian Grain: The Global Trail of a Stolen Harvest
According to Novyny.live: In 2025, Russia exported over two million tons of grain from temporarily occupied Ukrainian territories. Ukrainian intelligence reports that 40% of this illegally seized Ukrainian grain was received by Egypt, with shipments also directed to the Middle East, Africa, and Asia. Ukraine has imposed restrictions on 45 vessels identified as participating in transporting the stolen harvest, as well as on the activities of 39 ship captains. This systematic looting of agricultural resources constitutes a significant breach of international law.
International Response and Consequences
By April 2025, the United States had imposed sanctions on several Russian citizens, companies, and vessels involved in this operation. These measures aim to counter the activities of Russian entities engaged in the theft of Ukrainian grain. Andrii Sybiha emphasized that the operations of this covert grain fleet threaten global food security, a concern resonating at the international level. The grain in question is vital for global food supplies, making its illegal diversion a matter of worldwide economic and humanitarian concern.
The theft of Ukrainian grain underscores severe challenges to food security both in Ukraine and globally. These illicit grain shipments not only violate international norms but also risk destabilizing the economies of nations dependent on food imports. Given these risks, the international community is urged to respond more robustly to such actions to prevent further escalation and ensure stability in the global food market.
