Guided Bomb Strikes Pavlohrad for First Time; Casualties Reported as Russian Forces Escalate Tactics.
Deadly Attack on Pavlohrad
According to UATV: On July 20, 2023, Russian forces launched a guided aerial bomb on Pavlohrad in Dnipropetrovsk Oblast—the first such strike since the full-scale invasion began. The attack occurred around 10 a.m., killing two people and injuring at least 15 others. Targeting the city’s outskirts, the blast damaged dozens of vehicles and shattered windows in nearby apartment buildings. This marks a troubling shift in Russian military strategy, as guided munitions had not previously been used against this city.
Mayor and Residents React
Pavlohrad Mayor Anatoliy Vershyna visited the strike site and addressed the situation, noting that the bomb hit a residential building with no critical infrastructure nearby.
'So to say this was a mistaken hit… No, it's not a mistake. This is done to intimidate people. But I am confident that people are holding on.' - Anatoliy Vershyna
Local residents expressed shock and fear. 'Something incomprehensible is happening. What is important here, in our district? Nothing. Yet they dropped it on civilians. We lost two people here,' said Pavlohrad resident Valentyna. Another resident added, 'It's terrifying, people covered in blood. It's hard—I wouldn't wish this on anyone.'
The attack caused significant destruction in Pavlohrad, but the community continues to support each other amid the crisis.
This unprecedented use of a guided bomb against Pavlohrad signals an escalation of violence in the region and a potential change in Russian tactics. Striking residential areas with precision-guided munitions has deeply alarmed locals, who have already endured immense stress throughout the conflict.
- Community solidarity remains crucial.
- Residents are rallying together in the face of ongoing danger and trauma.
