Why Russia's Azov Sea Ports Are Now Exposed

According to Espreso.tv: Russia's export ports in the Sea of Azov have become dangerously exposed, according to expert Andriy Klymenko. He points out that Moscow can no longer adequately defend them due to heavy losses suffered by its Black Sea Fleet. This situation, he argues, gives Ukraine a strategic opening, as the ports most critical to Russian exports remain highly vulnerable to attack.

Since the start of the full-scale war, Russia has lost over 40 naval vessels, severely weakening its ability to secure its own maritime routes. Among the most important Azov Sea ports for Russian exports are:

  • the port of Azov
  • the port of Rostov-on-Don
  • the port of Taganrog

These ports—especially Taganrog, which Klymenko describes as 'possibly the third largest among them'—face additional challenges due to shallow waters that require constant dredging of shipping channels.

Drone Strikes Hit Russian Ports

On the night of July 10, the cities of Azov and Taganrog in Russia's Rostov region came under drone attack. In Taganrog, a fire broke out near the port area, while in Azov, a fuel depot was reportedly targeted.

Andriy Klymenko emphasized: 'Who was supposed to defend these ports? First and foremost, the Black Sea Fleet. But it has been effectively neutralized.'

He noted that Russia 'is physically incapable of ensuring the safety of the hundreds of vessels operating daily in the Azov direction.' Klymenko also remarked that these ports handle 'enormous cargo flows,' yet 'the Russians simply cannot protect them right now.'

With 'this window of vulnerability open and Russia having found no reliable way to shield its export ports,' Ukraine's armed forces have an opportunity to exploit the situation.

The exposure of Russia's Azov Sea ports could significantly shift the regional balance of power, as control over these strategic assets directly impacts Moscow's economic capabilities. As Russia struggles to secure its export routes, new prospects emerge for Ukrainian military operations. Sustaining pressure on these ports may become a key element in Ukraine's strategy to strengthen its position in the conflict.
