Russian Military Shifts Tactics

According to UATV: In response to the high effectiveness of Ukrainian air defense units, Russian forces are now deploying cheap reconnaissance drones to replace their more expensive strike models. Faced with significant losses, they are increasingly sending low-cost drones, including those based on the 'Molniya' platform, to the front lines. This marks a shift from previously used, more sophisticated drones like the 'Orlan', 'Zala', and 'Supercam', which could cost tens of thousands of dollars each.

Recent Russian Losses Reported

Ukrainian forces reported destroying the following enemy assets over the past day:

  • 900 personnel
  • approximately 2,000 unmanned aerial vehicles (drones)
  • more than 40 artillery systems
  • four tanks
  • seven armored combat vehicles

According to data from the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Russia's total losses on the front this winter have reached about 93,000 soldiers, nearly 3,000 artillery systems, and hundreds of tanks and armored vehicles. This high attrition rate is a key factor driving changes in Russian tactics.

As noted by Serhiy Beskrestnov, the situation remains difficult. The Russian military's tactical adaptation highlights the realities of modern combat, where the potency of Ukrainian air defenses plays a decisive role. This move toward cheaper, more expendable drones suggests Russia is attempting to adjust its strategy to mitigate losses inflicted by Ukrainian air defense systems. It may also indicate serious challenges in military logistics and a need to find new solutions for sustaining combat operations. Meanwhile, the successful actions of Ukrainian forces underscore their capability to effectively counter the adversary, which could influence the future course of the conflict.
