Kyiv Targeted in Complex Russian Missile Attack Involving Zircon and X-22 Weapons.
Complex Strike on Kyiv
According to TSN.ua: In the early hours of January 24, Russian forces launched a complex missile attack against Kyiv, employing a mix of weaponry including X-22 and Zircon anti-ship missiles. The Ukrainian Air Force confirmed the use of X-22 missiles in this assault. Targets for the Zircon missiles were located in the broader Kyiv region. This attack is part of Russia's ongoing, full-scale invasion of Ukraine, now approaching its third year.
This was not the first instance of Russia using such weaponry, including the advanced Zircon missiles, in its campaign against Ukraine. Military expert Kostiantyn Kryvolap noted that deploying Zircons, which are designed as anti-ship weapons, against the Ukrainian capital appears illogical. He suggested this indicates a significant shortage of ballistic missiles within the Russian military, forcing them to utilize whatever is available in their arsenal.
Russia's Strategic Campaign
The combined strike forms part of a broader strategic campaign Russia is waging against Ukraine, involving coordinated assaults using drones, ballistic missiles, and cruise missiles. The situation remains tense, with Ukrainian forces continuously responding to aerial threats.
This latest assault underscores the persistent danger Russia poses to Ukrainian cities, particularly the capital, and highlights how the aggressor's tactics are adapting amid dwindling resources. The use of anti-ship missiles for land attacks may signal a shortage of more suitable, modern armaments, a view supported by expert analysis.
Ukrainian military forces continue to strengthen their defenses and enhance air defense systems, a critical necessity given the current circumstances.
