Russian Forces Shift Battlefield Tactics: More Assault Units and Sustained Firepower.
Evolving Russian Military Tactics
According to UATV: Military analyst Oleksandr Musiyenko reported on February 17, 2023, that Russian forces have altered their frontline approach, now emphasizing sustained artillery pressure and the deployment of assault groups. This tactical shift is evident from the 137 combat engagements recorded on the front that day, indicating a significant intensification of hostilities. The ongoing war has seen both sides continuously adapt their battlefield strategies.
Musiyenko noted that while the Russian Federation's army has increased the number of assault groups, it has simultaneously reduced the size of personnel within each unit. This tactical adjustment enables Russian forces to focus their efforts on striking the operational rear areas of their opponent.

According to the analyst, this tactic aims to disperse Ukrainian forces, a goal further facilitated by exploiting current weather conditions. In practice, these smaller groups attempt to infiltrate, accumulate, concentrate, and advance further into positions.

Musiyenko also stressed that Russian artillery is operating at a high tempo, which increases pressure on Ukrainian defensive positions. These tactical changes and the heightened combat activity underscore that the frontline situation remains tense, with both sides persistently adapting their strategies in response to the evolving dynamics of the conflict.
Ukrainian Forces Adapt to Emerging Threats
The escalation in fighting and the shift in Russian military tactics point to a continual intensification of the conflict along the front. The increase in assault groups and the reliance on heavy artillery indicate Russia's intent to amplify pressure on Ukrainian forces. In turn, Ukrainian defenders must now adapt their defensive strategies to counter these new threats, a process that could significantly influence the broader trajectory of the war in the region.
