Three Precision Strikes Hit Ukrainian Railway Trains, Killing an Assistant Driver.
Russian Military Targets Ukraine’s Rail Network
According to UATV: On June 25, Russian forces carried out three strikes against Ukrainian trains—two in Zaporizhzhia and one in the Sumy region. These targeted attacks resulted in the death of an assistant train driver and caused major disruptions to rail services.
Oleksandr Pertsovskyi, Chairman of the Board of JSC 'Ukrzaliznytsia,' reported that two locomotive crews were successfully evacuated. However, the third strike in Zaporizhzhia proved fatal.
“The driver managed to move to a safe spot, but the assistant driver, who was in the rear cabin of the locomotive, could not be saved,” Pertsovskyi stated.
Heightened Safety Concerns on the Railways
Thanks to safety protocols, dozens of railway workers are saved each week, underscoring the critical importance of these measures in such hazardous conditions. The security situation on the railways remains tense, as Russian military actions continue to endanger the lives of rail employees.
These attacks on railway infrastructure highlight the ongoing threat that military operations in Ukraine pose to civilian assets. The loss of a Ukrzaliznytsia worker underscores the severity of the situation and the urgent need for enhanced safety measures to protect railway personnel in a country at war. Amid active hostilities, it is vital that rail transport continues to operate, facilitating the movement of cargo and passengers while supporting the nation’s economy.
