Ukrainian General Assesses Russian Military's Diminished Offensive Capability.
The Frontline Situation
According to UATV: In a March 8, 2023, interview with the FREEDOM TV channel, Ukrainian Army General Mykola Malomuzh stated that Russian forces currently lack the systematic capacity to conduct offensive operations. This assessment is supported by a significant drop in daily attacks along the front, which have decreased from 200-300 to just 125. According to Malomuzh, Russian combat resources have been depleted, creating a pressing need for replenishment.
He acknowledged that Russia maintains certain resources in specific sectors, particularly on the Pokrovsk-Kostiantynivka axis. Nonetheless, only 121 combat engagements were recorded over the past day. Malomuzh further emphasized the situation by noting:
"They failed to reach Sloviansk, even though their objective was to enter the city." — Mykola Malomuzh
This indicates a stabilization from the Ukrainian defensive side, which is now conducting counterattacks. The ongoing conflict has evolved into a war of attrition, where resource management is critical.
Choices Facing the Russian Army
The general believes the Russian military now faces a choice: to conduct a large-scale mobilization or to seek new reserves for its army. He pointed out that:
"The enemy's attempt to advance toward Zaporizhzhia from other sectors was unsuccessful." — Mykola Malomuzh
This demonstrates that Ukrainian forces continue to actively thwart enemy attempts to advance in key directions such as Lyman, Sloviansk, and Huliaipole.
Consequently, while the frontline situation remains tense, Ukrainian defense forces are demonstrating resilience and a readiness to protect their positions. The reduced activity of Russian troops likely signals their resource exhaustion, calling into question their ability to sustain offensive actions. The successful containment of the adversary by Ukrainian forces could prove a significant factor in the conflict's future trajectory, allowing them to fortify positions and prepare for potential future challenges.
