Romania’s Supreme Defense Council Holds Emergency Session
According to UATV: Romanian President Nicușor Dan has convened an emergency meeting of the Supreme Defense Council following a serious incident in the city of Galați. A Russian drone crashed into a residential building there, injuring two people. In the aftermath, approximately 70 residents were evacuated from the danger zone.
Romanian military forces detected the drone, but it was not shot down. In response, F-16 fighter jets and a helicopter were deployed. President Dan stated that full responsibility for the incident lies with the Russian Federation. He also emphasized that Romania’s political, humanitarian, and military support for Ukraine remains unwavering.
Romania’s Response and the International Situation
Romania has informed its NATO allies about the events and has officially appealed to the United Nations Security Council. President Dan noted that Romania has asked its allies to deploy additional drone countermeasures. This incident is the most serious since the start of Russia’s war against Ukraine, highlighting the growing security risks in the region.
The Galați incident underscores an escalation of security threats in Eastern Europe, particularly in the context of Russia’s military actions in Ukraine. As a NATO member, Romania is working to strengthen its defense capabilities and ensure the protection of its citizens.
