Ukrainian intelligence uncovers new Russian tactics: Kremlin propagandists suddenly discover their 'Ukrainian roots'.
Moscow's new propaganda push
According to UATV: The leadership in Moscow has launched a fresh disinformation campaign. The goal is to dilute the image of Russia as an aggressor state and mitigate international responsibility for the war against Ukraine. At its core, the conflict is to be portrayed as an internal Ukrainian dispute, where 'good Ukrainians' are fighting against 'other Ukrainians.' This would push Russia's role as an aggressor into the background.
On March 17, the Ukrainian foreign intelligence service drew attention to this new strategy. At a session of the UN Security Council, Russian representatives such as Vasily Nebensia and Rodion Misurkin suddenly emphasized their alleged Ukrainian origin. Vladimir Medinsky (born in the Cherkasy region) and Kirill Dmitriev (born in Kyiv) also joined these claims. The intelligence service explained that the tactic aims to shift the debate from 'Russians against Ukrainians' to 'real Ukrainians against Ukrainians.' Should the international community adopt this narrative, Moscow could downgrade the status of the conflict and thus escape a harsher condemnation.
Planned special tribunal
Parallel to these propaganda activities, preparations are underway for an international special tribunal for the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine. President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that work on this tribunal should be completed within this year, aiming to convene it by the end of 2026. Therefore, the new Russian campaign coincides precisely with global efforts to hold Russia accountable for its aggression.
This disinformation offensive is part of a broader Russian strategy to manipulate the perception of the war on the world stage. In light of the planned tribunal, Moscow seems to be trying to weaken its own positions and escape punishment. Therefore, from the Ukrainian and international perspective, it remains crucial to defend the true facts of the conflict and hold those responsible for their actions accountable.
