Romania's New Entry Rules for Ukrainian Motorists

According to Novyny.live: Ukrainian drivers are now being denied entry at border checkpoints between the Odesa region and Romania if they cannot present a valid vehicle inspection certificate. This new Romanian mandate requires all cars to pass a technical inspection at certified stations to confirm roadworthiness before crossing. This policy change is part of broader EU efforts to regulate cross-border traffic and vehicle safety standards.

Required Documentation for Entry

In addition to the vehicle inspection certificate, travelers from Ukraine must present the following to enter Romania:

  • A biometric passport or valid visa;
  • The vehicle's registration documents;
  • Proof of medical insurance;
  • Documentation stating the purpose of the trip;
  • Military registration documents for men aged 18 to 60.

If driving a vehicle registered to someone else, a notarized power of attorney is also mandatory.

Furthermore, Romania prohibits the importation of the following items:

  • Meat and meat products;
  • Dairy products;
  • Honey;
  • Weapons;
  • Narcotics;
  • Pirated goods;
  • Animals without proper permits;
  • Cash exceeding 10,000 euros without declaration.

Travelers are permitted to stay within the Schengen Area for up to 90 days within any 180-day period. Medical insurance must provide coverage of at least 30,000 euros. While visa-free travel for Ukrainians is scheduled to begin in 2026, compliance with all current entry requirements remains essential for border crossing.

These new Romanian regulations highlight a heightened focus on road safety and stricter administrative controls for vehicles entering from Ukraine. The measures reflect increased border management procedures, which could significantly impact travel planning for Ukrainian citizens.
