NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte is heading to the USA to discuss a peace strategy regarding Ukraine with Trump
NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte is heading to the USA to discuss the strategy of peace negotiations regarding Ukraine with Donald Trump. The main goal of the visit is to achieve a fair peace that does not encourage Russian aggression and also provides Ukraine with security guarantees.
This was reported by The Washington Post.
As noted by a senior German official, Rutte intends to convince Trump of the necessity to resolve the Ukrainian issue in a way that it does not become a burden for him in case he returns to the presidency in the USA.
European leaders are united in the opinion that any successful peace agreement must exclude the possibility of the conflict recurring in the future.
At a recent meeting of NATO defense ministers in Brussels, Rutte urged his European colleagues to cooperate with Trump, emphasizing the importance of direct dialogue: 'Do not discuss Trump behind his back, but invite him to dialogue,' he said.
Furthermore, Rutte emphasized the importance of US support for European security issues.
He also urged European countries to increase defense spending, exceeding the established target of 2% of GDP, warning that a Russian victory in the war would lead to significantly higher costs for containing its influence. 'If Putin wins, it will cost us not 3%, but 4 or 5% of GDP,' he noted.
