At the gala dinner of the International Chess Federation (FIDE), held on the occasion of the organization's 100th anniversary, Norwegian grandmaster Magnus Carlsen was awarded the title of the greatest chess player of the past century. After that, he gave a passionate speech in support of Ukraine. Due to the importance of his words, we decided to quote the statement in the blockquote tag. It is worth noting that the Norwegian considers the award an honor, but he believes that Garry Kasparov had a better career than he did. Carlsen also noted that Kasparov is more deserving of this award and would have spoken to say this again in his honor. Carlsen also expressed his attitude towards the Russian and Belarusian chess federations and supported their suspension. It should be noted that in the coming days, the FIDE General Assembly will consider the possibility of lifting sanctions against the Russian and Belarusian chess federations. Ukraine has expressed serious concern about this possibility and even suggested imposing personal sanctions against the FIDE president if such decisions are made.
