Denmark calls on the EU to accelerate sanctions against Russia

Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen urged the European Union to increase pressure on Russia and to agree on the ninth sanctions package more quickly. He stated this on August 30 before an informal meeting on foreign policy in Copenhagen.

'Regarding Ukraine, we need to increase pressure on Putin. I think it is absolutely clear that he is just stalling, trying to divert attention from his attacks on civilians and infrastructure,' he emphasized.

Rasmussen also mentioned that at the previous meeting on August 29, military support and security guarantees for Ukraine were discussed, emphasizing that Denmark's position on this issue is very strong.

'I believe that we have a moral advantage to discuss. We support any diplomatic efforts to resolve the situation and end the war. But Ukraine should be placed in a strong position, which means that pressure on Putin must continue,' Rasmussen added.

The minister reported that EU foreign ministers will also consider the possibility of using frozen Russian assets to support Ukraine. He noted that this issue may take a long time to discuss and emphasized the need to act more quickly.

'We will have such a discussion, and we welcome it. It is not easy. I know there are different positions, and I think we should not wait for this discussion to conclude,' he explained.

Rasmussen also emphasized that the 19th sanctions package could encompass various sectors of the Russian economy, and therefore the EU needs to respond faster, particularly by investing in the Ukrainian defense industry.

'We need to consider the full range of sanctions: oil, the financial sector, the shadow fleet,' Rasmussen noted.

Calling for more active measures, he stressed that Europe is taking the right steps, but it is necessary to act more swiftly.

Thus, Denmark's call and that of Minister Rasmussen personally indicate a strengthening of the European consensus regarding support for Ukraine. The speed and decisiveness in implementing new sanctions could play a key role in the fight against Russian aggression and ensuring stability in the region. Support for Ukraine and the joint efforts of EU countries remain a priority in contemporary international relations.
