Court Sentences Russian Agent Who Planned to Set Fire to Relay Cabinets in Ukraine.
12-Year Prison Term for Attempted Arson on Railway Infrastructure
According to Espreso.tv: A man convicted of trying to ignite relay cabinets to disrupt train traffic has been sentenced to 12 years and 1 month in prison, along with the confiscation of his property. The court found him guilty under Articles 28(2) and 113(2) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine.
Details of the Crime and Security Service Actions
According to case materials, the individual intended to set fire to relay cabinets at a signaling installation, which could have severely impacted freight logistics in central Ukraine. To carry out his plan, he purchased fire-resistant gloves and a canister filled with a flammable mixture. Officers from the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) uncovered the plot and arrested the agent as he attempted to commit the arson.
This case is part of a broader pattern of Russian intelligence efforts to damage critical infrastructure in Ukraine. For instance, on May 25, SBU counterintelligence detained a Russian agent who was coordinating an airstrike on Kyiv that occurred on the night of May 24. Additionally, on May 29, another Russian agent was arrested for directing attacks on Kharkiv. Following an investigation, that agent received a 15-year prison sentence with asset forfeiture.
These incidents highlight the crucial role of Ukrainian law enforcement in combating terrorism and safeguarding the nation's critical infrastructure. The exposure and apprehension of individuals attempting to cause harm demonstrate the high level of threat posed by foreign intelligence agencies seeking to destabilize Ukraine. Continuous monitoring and proactive measures by the SBU are essential to preventing such crimes in the future.
