Millions Could Get Tax Breaks Under New US Senate Proposals — Here's Who Qualifies.
Booker and Van Hollen Outline Their Tax Relief Plans
According to Vox - Загальний: Democratic Senators Cory Booker and Chris Van Hollen have introduced separate proposals that would completely eliminate federal income taxes for tens of millions of Americans, with the revenue shortfall offset by higher taxes on the wealthy. These initiatives aim to ease the tax burden on low-income earners while bolstering social programs.
Both lawmakers are pushing to scrap federal income taxes for individuals earning less than $46,000 and married couples making under $92,000. Booker’s plan goes further, proposing tax-free status for Americans earning up to $75,000. If enacted, these measures could provide significant financial relief to a large portion of the population.
Costs, Consequences, and Social Spending
Van Hollen’s plan would reduce federal revenue by $1.5 trillion, while Booker’s could cut revenue by more than $5.5 trillion. The social programs championed by the senators could cost over $30 trillion over the next decade. Notably, these proposals come as the Social Security Trust Fund is projected to run out of funds by 2033, raising concerns about long-term fiscal sustainability.
As a result, the Booker and Van Hollen plans challenge the nation’s financial stability even as they seek to support economically vulnerable households.
Both proposals have sparked intense debate among politicians and economists, as they could fundamentally reshape U.S. tax policy. On one hand, they aim to reduce inequality and strengthen social safety nets; on the other, their implementation risks severe budgetary consequences. This underscores the delicate balance between addressing social needs and maintaining fiscal responsibility.
