Eastern-Saratov Field: Can Ukraine Increase Its Oil Production?

The Eastern-Saratov is located in the south of Ukraine in the Odesa region. Discovered in 1972, the field has become an important study area for the region.

Novyny.LIVE shares information about the potential of this field.

Geological Features of the Field

The Eastern-Saratov oil field is a key object of oil extraction in Ukraine. Oil is found there in the middle and upper Devonian deposits.

This field is located in a folding zone, and the reservoirs where oil is stored consist of limestones and dolomites.

  • Oil deposits formed in the middle and upper Devonian.
  • The reservoirs contain porous-fractured and cavernous limestones and dolomites.
  • The productive strata include anhydrites, dolomites, and limestones.

The total thickness of the productive packages ranges from 291.8 to 331.6 meters, which is very favorable for extraction.

'The oil from the Eastern-Saratov and Zhovtyar fields is waxy, it is difficult and expensive to extract. But this is only partly true. The wells near the village of Kulevcha in the Saratov and Zhovtyar districts produce such oil. However, closer to the Danube, in the Suvorov region, raw materials more convenient for extraction were discovered in the 2000s. By the way, there is natural gas in these areas.'

Oil Reserves of the Eastern-Saratov Field

According to geological studies, the initial recoverable reserves are estimated at 1,739 thousand tons. These are average indicators for Ukraine.

The density of degassed oil allows it to be easily processed, and the well production rate is 15-20 cubic meters per day.

Challenges and Risks of Extraction

Drilling in complex geological conditions and waste disposal pose challenges for the development of the field. Environmental problems and political instability in the country may complicate extraction; however, modern technologies can overcome these difficulties.

Future of the Field

Expanding extraction and attracting foreign investments could significantly enhance the productivity of the Eastern-Saratov field. It can be used for the domestic market and potential exports, contributing to Ukraine's energy security.

Data on geological features and conditions for oil extraction help assess the potential of Ukrainian fields and possible issues or challenges that arise in the process of working with these fields. It is crucial to apply modern technologies and attract foreign partners for the successful extraction and use of domestic oil resources.
