Despite these technological advances, however, measurable shifts in unemployment levels have remained minimal.

The State of the Labor Market

The U.S. unemployment rate has held steady at around 4 percent for the last two years. This stability indicates that the labor market has not suffered significant workforce reductions, even with the adoption of new technologies. According to a KPMG survey, 92 percent of CEOs stated they plan to increase their number of employees. Meanwhile, 69 percent of CEOs in an EY-Parthenon survey anticipate that AI will lead to the preservation or even expansion of their workforce.

Key findings suggest that despite AI's rapid progress, it has not yet led to a substantial rise in joblessness. Specifically, between November 2022 and January 2026, the number of workers in key U.S. white-collar industries declined by only 1.9 percent. This implies that individuals do not necessarily need to outperform AI to retain their jobs. It is important to note, however, that the primary evidence for AI's exponential progress contains serious methodological flaws, which calls for further study of this topic.

Thus, while artificial intelligence continues to advance and be integrated into various fields, its impact on employment has so far not resulted in major changes to the overall unemployment rate. This ongoing debate often centers on whether AI will augment human workers or replace them entirely.

This situation may indicate that companies still see value in retaining human capital despite technological shifts.
