EU Membership and US Security Guarantees: Kyiv’s Non-Negotiable Terms for Peace, Says Foreign Minister Sybiha.
Why Ukraine’s EU Accession Matters for Stability
According to UATV: Speaking at a panel titled 'Shifting Roles: Ukraine as Europe’s Security Anchor' in Ankara, Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha stressed that joining the European Union is essential for lasting peace and security. He stated that
“EU membership is one of the core pillars of a sustainable peace and security framework for Ukraine.”
Security Conditions Set by Kyiv
Sybiha also laid out the security prerequisites, which include binding commitments from the United States and a continued military presence from allied forces on Ukrainian soil. According to the minister, Washington’s backing is vital for strengthening Ukraine’s armed forces. He emphasized that
“Ukraine no longer needs permission from partners to strike military targets deep inside Russia,”signaling a major shift in how the country approaches its national defense.
These remarks underscore Ukraine’s strategic push for deeper integration with the European Union—a pivotal step in bolstering its global standing. As Russian military threats intensify, this new posture, which grants Kyiv greater autonomy in conducting military operations, could prove decisive for regional stability. The United States, as a key strategic ally, will continue to play a crucial role in supporting Ukraine’s security amid evolving challenges.
