Szijjártó Claims Political Motives Behind Druzhba Oil Pipeline Blockade: Highlights of the Visit.
Remarks on the Hungarian Delegation's Visit to Ukraine
According to Novyny.live: Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó has weighed in on his country’s delegation trip to Ukraine, asserting that the blockade of the Druzhba oil pipeline is politically driven. The delegation’s visit took place on March 11. According to Szijjártó, the mission achieved its objectives, and Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán noted that the team returned with tangible outcomes.
Only ambassadors were permitted to meet with Ukraine’s state-owned energy company Naftogaz. However, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy questioned the purpose of the Hungarian visit, stating he was unsure why they had come. It is worth noting that a planned visit by Hungary’s Deputy Minister of Energy was postponed.
Political Context and Energy Security
Péter Szijjártó further remarked that Naftogaz was 'forced to speak out,' pointing to pressure the company faced. The minister added that 'it is obvious that someone is pulling the strings here—this oil blockade is clearly aimed at influencing Hungary’s parliamentary elections.'
'We got the machine running, but the Ukrainians couldn’t manage that.' Viktor Orbán
Meanwhile, Volodymyr Zelenskyy emphasized that 'Russia, not Ukraine, is destroying the Druzhba pipeline.'
As a result, the Hungarian delegation’s visit to Ukraine has sparked debate not only over bilateral ties but also over broader political dynamics tied to regional energy security. The situation surrounding the Druzhba pipeline underscores the complexity of energy relations between Ukraine and Hungary, as well as the impact of Hungary’s domestic politics on international decisions. This visit could serve as a catalyst for further negotiations and discussions on energy cooperation between the two countries.
