Ukrainian Air Defense Thwarts Major Drone Attack on Odesa

According to Novyny.live: On January 21, 2023, Ukrainian defense forces successfully repelled a mass drone assault on the Odesa region, destroying six Iranian-made Shahed-136 attack drones. Naval and border guard units played a key role in neutralizing the incoming drones during the attack. The Shahed-136, also known as the "Geranium-2," is a low-cost, long-range weapon Russia has used extensively to target Ukrainian infrastructure.

Southern Ukraine's air defense units demonstrated their effectiveness by shooting down or jamming a total of 13 hostile drones during the engagement. This incident was part of a broader campaign, as Ukrainian defenders had already destroyed three reconnaissance and 26 attack drones the previous day, January 20th.

Civilian Infrastructure Damaged in the Assault

The drone attack on Odesa resulted in damage to several civilian sites, including:

  • four private houses,
  • a two-story residential building,
  • a furniture workshop,
  • a garage and a passenger car.

Regrettably, one 50-year-old civilian was injured and required hospitalization. This underscores the severe risks to non-combatants in conflict zones, despite defensive successes.

The assault on Odesa highlights the persistent aerial threats facing Ukrainian regions. While the effective response by Ukrainian forces demonstrates their growing capability to counter such threats, the damage to civilian property is a stark reminder of the war's toll on local communities. Such events continue to shape international perceptions and the flow of support for Ukraine's defense against the ongoing invasion.
