Quarantine Imposed in Kharkiv Region Due to Rabies

According to Novyny.live: Starting June 29, quarantine measures have been enforced in three villages in the Kharkiv region—Berezivske, Kurortne, and Peresichne—following a confirmed case of rabies in a domestic dog. The animal died from the disease on June 22, and laboratory tests conducted on June 27 verified the presence of this dangerous virus. Notably, the dog had not been vaccinated against rabies.

In the same household where the infected dog lived, five other dogs and one cat also remained unvaccinated. The owners of the deceased animal are now undergoing post-exposure rabies treatment to prevent potential complications. Meanwhile, all other pets in the household have been vaccinated, reducing the risk of further disease spread. Rabies is a fatal viral illness that affects the central nervous system and can be transmitted to humans through bites or scratches from infected animals.

Vaccination Urged and Rabies Symptoms

Health officials are urging residents of the affected villages to contact veterinarians for pet vaccinations. The Derhachi veterinary clinic, located at 18 Sosnovyi Entrance in Derhachi, is ready to provide assistance. For those in the village of Vilshany, vaccinations are available at 12 Parkivska Street.

Rabies symptoms in animals can include:

  • aggressive behavior
  • lethargy
  • excessive salivation
  • refusal to eat or drink
  • difficulty swallowing
  • lack of coordination
  • paralysis

Timely vaccination of pets is a critical step in preventing rabies outbreaks and protecting public health.

The quarantine imposed in three Kharkiv region villages highlights the critical need for pet vaccination, particularly in areas where rabies cases may emerge. Local authorities and veterinary services are actively working to educate the public on preventive measures to avoid future outbreaks.
