What prevents parliamentarians from defending LGBT rights: unexpected research results.
Ukrainian churches, which are part of the All-Ukrainian Council of Churches and Religious Organizations, almost do not address LGBT issues in their speeches. However, they still have influence over lawmakers who hinder the adoption of any decisions in favor of LGBT. This is claimed by the human rights center 'Our World'.
Ukrainian churches do not share hostility towards LGBT. Head of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine, Metropolitan Epiphanius, rejected the proposal for the blessing of same-sex couples made by Pope Francis. At the same Time, he noted that even Roman and Greek Catholic bishops in Ukraine do not support such a position.
According to the report, Ukrainian religious resources continue to spread manipulative materials from the website 'All Together!'. These materials create a false impression of Ukraine as a 'leftist' country where freedom of speech and religion is violated in favor of 'propaganda of homosexuality' and 'gender ideology'. This has led some ultra-conservative Protestants from the USA to believe in this propaganda, negatively impacting US support.
According to the report, since the beginning of 2024, the All-Ukrainian Council of Churches and Religious Organizations and representatives of the churches have held several meetings with conservative religious and political circles in the USA, trying to dispel the negative effect of their statements regarding LGBT.
However, the All-Ukrainian Council of Churches and Religious Organizations continues to use homophobic propaganda, protesting against the Equality March in Kyiv, which it describes as part of a 'left-radical political movement that continues Marxism' and calls bills aimed at protecting LGBTQ rights 'laws that promote the spread of sin and immorality in Ukrainian society.'
Maryana Bezuhla, a member of parliament, called LGBT representatives people with psycho-physiological deviations. She emphasizes that she has nothing against them, but believes that this is 'deviations from the norm' or diseases. She also claims that a person with a homosexual orientation may not have a desire to have children and thus fall out of the process of natural selection.
Recently, a lecture by historian, philosopher, sociologist, and public figure Serhiy Chaplyhin titled 'Crisis of national identity or its revival?' was canceled at the Kyiv-Mohyla Business School, suggesting that his views on the LGBT+ community are inappropriate.
