Federal Chancellor of Germany Olaf Scholz plans to call Russian President Vladimir Putin. This conversation will be the first direct contact between them in two years. The call is planned before the G20 meeting in November in Brazil.
Olaf Scholz will be the first leader of major countries to restore direct contact with Putin and support Ukraine.
The last time Scholz and Putin spoke by phone was in December 2022.
During this time, the situation in Ukraine remains tense as Russia continues attacks on the country's energy infrastructure.
In mid-October, Germany will hold talks on further support for Ukraine on the initiative of US President Joe Biden.
The USA and Germany are the largest suppliers of weapons to Ukraine.
Escalation of tension in the region
Putin also announced the expansion of criteria for the use of nuclear weapons, which upsets Western countries. In addition, Russia plans to increase its military spending by 30% in the budget for 2025 - up to 130 billion euros. Experts warn that these steps could lead to further escalation of tension in the region.
Earlier, the head of the opposition German party "Christian Democratic Union" Friedrich Merz stated that Chancellor Olaf Scholz does not seek to ensure that Ukraine wins the war against Russia.
