Footballer Convicted of Rape

According to The Sun: 19-year-old footballer Niall Geany has been sentenced to three years and nine months of imprisonment for raping a woman in her own home.

The incident occurred on March 3, 2024, in Edinburgh when Geany, a player for the lower-league team Spartans, shared a taxi with the victim after a night out with friends.

Niall Geany attacked a woman in her bedroom in Edinburgh last March

Geany found himself 'isolated' outside the woman's home, and she invited him in to charge her mobile phone and help him get home.

However, the footballer, who lives in Kirkliston, began to make advances towards the woman, despite her having a boyfriend.

The court reported that the woman showed no romantic intentions towards him.

She repeatedly told Geany 'No', but he continued to attack her.

Geany admitted to the police that the woman had asked him to stop.

Despite this, he raped the woman, resulting in her injuries.

After the incident, witnesses noted that the woman was 'noticeably distressed', and there was a noticeable change in her behavior.

Geany was convicted of rape causing injury, and received a sentence at the High Court in Glasgow.

“She let you into her home and placed her trust in you that night.”
“You have clearly committed a sex offense.”
“The impact on the victim, described in evidence, demonstrates the immense fear and trauma you have caused.”

Judge Alistair Watson noted that, considering Geany's 'high level of intelligence' and 'low risk of re-offending', he believed that Geany could be rehabilitated.

The judge also added that, considering Geany's young age, he decided to impose a shorter prison sentence for this offense.

Geany will initially serve his sentence in a young offenders institution, before being transferred to prison.

During the sentencing announcement, one person in the courtroom exclaimed: “Yes!”.

The judge also placed Geany on the sex offenders register and issued a contact ban with the victim for an indefinite period.

Lawyer Richard Souther previously noted that his client had 'excelled' in academic sports and acknowledged that this crime had significantly harmed the victim.

This case has sparked outrage within society as it revolves not only around violence but also about the trust that the victim placed in the assailant. Judicial decisions try to reflect not only punishment but also the possibility of rehabilitating such offenders. However, whether it is possible to restore trust in individuals who commit such horrific crimes remains an important question in today's society.
