Ukraine Phases Out Old Kopiyka Coins from Circulation

According to Novyny.live: By 2026, Ukraine is actively removing several denominations of older kopiyka coins from everyday use. Citizens can exchange or sell these invalid coins for banknotes or other coins at authorized banks. The denominations being withdrawn include 1, 2, 5, and 25 kopiykas. In the future, the 10-kopiyka coin and the gold-colored 1-hryvnia coin minted before 2018 will also be gradually phased out. According to official information, the exchange of invalid coins is possible until the end of martial law and for 90 days after its conclusion.

The National Bank of Ukraine has also removed 1, 2, 5, and 10 hryvnia banknotes from circulation. Currently, only six banknote denominations remain in use: 20, 50, 100, 200, 500, and 1000 hryvnias. This means Ukrainians should pay close attention to their old coins, as some could be worth a significant amount.

Valuable Ukrainian Coins

Among the most expensive Ukrainian coins, several stand out:

  • 1 kopiyka from 1992:
    • Serial number 1.11АЕ – from 4,000 to 14,000 hryvnias
    • Serial number 1.35АА – 11,000 hryvnias
  • 2 kopiykas from 1994 (series 2(10 к.)АА) – from 4,500 hryvnias

    • Series 3Ваг – from 4,000 to 11,000 hryvnias
  • 1 hryvnia from 1992 with series 1.1АА1 – from 10,000 to 20,000 hryvnias

    • Series 2АА2 – from 11,000 to 16,000 hryvnias
  • 1 hryvnia from 1996 with series 1АБг – from 6,000 to 8,000 hryvnias

This means Ukrainians not only have a chance to find hidden value in old kopiykas but can also exchange them at authorized banks.

The removal of old coins and banknotes from circulation is part of a broader financial reform in Ukraine aimed at modernizing the payment system and improving cash flow. This process can also simplify financial transactions and enhance security, as the remaining denominations are more user-friendly. At the same time, the option to exchange old coins adds extra value for the public, since some of them may carry collectible worth.
